Cougers
CHAMPIONS!!!!
With perfect playing conditions
at Turnhams everything was set for us to try and win
our biggest match of the season BUT DIDN'T WE MAKE HARD
WORK OF IT!!
I don't think Connor had a save
to make and our defence only looked liked
conceding because of one or two errors at the back. Our
midfield did ok as did our forwards in general play but
we must have missed 10 good goal scoring opportunities
which nearly cost us dear. Scoring at the end of the
first half and again at the end of the game is not the
way to make your manager happy and on the basis I HAVE
NOT GOT MUCH HAIR LEFT anyway please don't do that again.
It
has been a pleasure running the team this
season and we are very lucky to have such
a fine set of players, parents, supporters and coaching
team and winning the league title is the icing on
the cake. Now we can look forward to the
Holland tour in May and then we can all start thinking
about next season. Lets hope that we do as well in the
summer tournaments this year as we did last year by winning
4 main competitions but as always we must not forget
that we have play a competitive, good passing game in
the right spirit of the game which is what Barton Rovers
is all about,
Cheers and well done

Barton Rovers C 5 v 0 Cold Ash B
We completed our fixtures with a well deserved 5-0 home win over Cold Ash B.
Tristan opened the scoring midway through the first half with a stunning turn and shot from 15 yards out. He controlled the ball with his knee, before spinning round and volleying the ball home. Nathan then took over by claiming four well taken goals, very impressive for a player who started the season as a centre back having only recently taken up a striking position. Nathan has finished the season on 10 goals, a superb return, but he was pipped to the managers’ man of the match award by midfielder Toby Herman who finished his first season in Barton colours with a fine display. His running on and off the ball, and his passing earned him the award.
Returning to the starting line up after injury was left back Alex Moulsley who pitched in with his best display in a red and black shirt too. The parents took notice of his performance because they voted him their man of the match.
So that’s it for this season – our first at 11 a side. It’s been absolutely fantastic from start to finish. We ended up 3rd in the league and we were runners up in the cup, having reached our first final. But the stats don’t paint the real picture. The 16 boys of Barton Rovers Under 12C do that well enough themselves. Lads, you have played some superb football, put in a huge amount of effort and you have done yourselves proud. Congratulations to each and every one of you. We look forward to doing it all over again in September!

Barton Rovers 0 v 1 AFC Henley Stars
From the best performance of the season last game to the worst of the season against the same team?
Henleys game plan from the off was to close us down quickly and not let us settle on the ball which they done to great effect. Both teams had chances to score in the first 10 minutes with our GK Ben Gibbs keeping us in the game with 2 fine saves, however he could not do anything about Henleys very fortunate goal after a blocked shot looped off a Barton player over Bens head into the net 1 nil to Henley at half time.
The second half was a different story with Barton on the attack through out, but unlike other games when we have been a goal down we seemed to lack that bit of quality and composure rushing shots and crosses and forgetting to pass and the right moments.
Jayden Bogle was our shinning light on the day picking up MOTM for a determined display and on one occasion done a brilliant Maradona which left the Henley defence scratching their heads, well done Jayden!!!!
The game ended 0 - 1 to Henley who worked hard from start to finish so well done to them. Our boys were very down in the dumps afterwards but i think this maybe the jolt they need before next weeks Cup Final.
GOOD LUCK NEXT WEEK LADS I WILL BE THINKING OF YOU ON SUNDAY

That was the week that was!
Caversham AFC United 3 v 2 Barton Rovers C
Barton Rovers C left themselves with too much to do in their away fixture at Caversham AFC United. The home side were 2-0 up at the break and scored a third to lead 3-0 midway through the second half. Marc Langham sidefooted Barton back into the game and brother Matthew tucked away a late penalty to set up a tense finish, but it came too late to affect the result. Barton’s man of the match was brave goalkeeper Clayton Holloway.
Goring Robins 2 v 3 Barton Rovers C
Barton Rovers C were 3-2 away winners at Goring Robins. Leading scorer Matthew Langham latched on to a perfect through ball from brother Marc, before drawing the Robins keeper and slotting home. In the second half striker Nathan Cook scored two fine individual goals, but it was right back Connor Deeks who was Barton’s man of the match who did a great job defensively and when going forward. He was well supported by fellow full back Ross Whitaker and the pacy Alex Winn, also on the left side.
Barton Rovers C 0 v 3 Laurel Park
Barton Rovers C went down 3-0 at home to Laurel Park who clinched the league title with their win. Laurel took an early lead but had to wait until midway through the second half to increase their lead, thanks to some determined play from the hosts. A late goal from the visitors sealed it but both teams contributed to an entertaining game. Midfielder Tristan Evans was Barton’s man of the match but other top performers for Rovers were goalkeeper Clayton Holloway and brother Aaron in central defence alongside partner Sean Ward. Meanwhile left back Alex Moulsley had a solid game despite playing with a fractured arm. The two team’s meet again in the trophy final this coming weekend.
That certainly was... the week that was!

CHAMPIONS!
P16 W13 D2 L0 F79 A11 Pts 42
Sundays game was the finest performance i have seen from the team this season with every player at their best so much so that i could not separate them to give a man of the match award.
The starting 7 was Ben Gibbs(GK), Ryo Masuda(CB), Luca Albanese(CB), Jayden Bogle(LM), Kai Masuda(CM), Oliver Higgs(CM), William Frank(LM).
From the first whistle we took control of the came against a good footballing side who also know how to defend. William and Jayden attacking at pace down the flanks with kai & Oliver attacking through the middle we forced at least 8 first half corners with 12 - 15 shots being blocked or saved by Henley's excellent keeper. Our attacking play was backed up by Ryo & Luca who controlled any Henley attack and either passed the ball out of defence or dribbled into space setting up another forward move, however the best part of their game was the way they positioned themselves always covering for each other 0 - 0 half time.
No changes at half time the team had played superbly the only thing missing a goal. The second half started as a mirror image of the first with Barton on the attack, although we did start to rush our shots and on several occasions should have given the keeper no chance, we paid for this as a long clearance beat our last man and a Henley player run onto it and slotted the ball home with an excellent finish with their first shot on target.
This shock seemed to put our team into another gear and the next 5 minutes was unbelievable. Oliver Higgs put us level with a superb header guiding the ball into the top corner from a Jayden Bogle cross. Kai Masuda put us 2 - 1 up with his 15th goal of the season after a brilliant passing move. Then Jayden Bogle pounced to make the points safe with a cool right foot finish.
After the goals we made 3 changes with Harry Peters coming on for William, Max Robbins for Jayden and Toby Staker for Luca all slotting straight in continuing the tempo the game ending 3 - 1.
Special praise for William Frank who had an excellent first half, Henley at times had 3 players chasing him up and down the left wing which created space for his team mates, well done Will.
As the Henley manager said the lads deserve to win the league with the way they play football. We are not finished yet though 2 league games to go and the Cup final which should be interesting with so many away during the school holiday.
Well done boys you should be really proud of yourselves the way you play and behave a credit to the club.
Good luck to the Under 12's and 16's in your last few games. PH

Barton Rovers 3 Caversham AFC United 1
This was a really exciting game, and plenty of effort from the boys saw us come through it with flying colours, although it took us a while to settle and we had to come from a goal down to win the match.
Despite the fact we had a couple of early chances, it was Caversham who proved to be more clinical. As we pushed up the pitch, they hit us straight through the middle and we couldn't’t deal with their pacy striker who burst through. Maciej, in goal, came of his line well enough but the ball was tucked past him and just inside the post. It was a very well taken goal.
Jordan leveled following a great move down the right wing, showing it pays to play to the width of the pitch – we had told the boys before kick off that would be the key to a good performance. Joseph exploited the width perfectly, and the ball ended up with Jordan sending a first time shot off the outside of his boot, sailing away from the keeper and into the net.
In the second half Marc had a glorious chance after jinking his way through, but he scooped his shot over from a tight angle. He had combined really well with Matthew and between them they worked a great opportunity. Aaron did put us into the lead for the first time though, with a terrific strike from around the edge of the penalty area following a corner. Then Marc and Ross combined many times on the left wing, passing the ball around in little triangles. Alex M was a threat with his long throws especially in the opposition half, and Joseph made some great raids down the right wing. We looked quite safe at the back with Clayton, Sean and Connor putting in very solid performances.
Our win was sealed when the lively Alex Winn played a superb through ball to Nathan who had been threatening a goal. He still had loads to do to even win the ball, but he did just that, took a couple of strides and fired the ball past the advancing goalie, who had been quite tough to beat. This was Nathan’s first goal in the league following his three in the Cup recently.
So a great all round performance, well done lads.

Barton Rovers 3 v 3 Kennet Valley
Barton Rovers Under 13 B played only their third game of the post Christmas period against high flying Kennet Valley in a first ever Saturday morning fixture at Turnham Farm - rumoured to be the money spinning "17th game", but management deny a rumour suggesting we have declined a place in the Kennet Valley tournament for a place in the Shanghai 6's !
Experimenting with a new 4 - 5 - 1 formation to try and counter Kennet's free flowing attack, Barton started the game in excellent fashion - tight and compact at the back and in midfield, with lightening quick breaks up front. Joe "King of Bling" Ritchie opened the scoring with an screaming left foot volley, Alex Turnbull nipped in well for the second and Joe "Bomber" Beasley scored a third just before the half time break, to put us in a commanding 3 nil lead - before KV hit back with a well taken goal just before half time.
At half time, all the talk was of "job only half done" and we knew that we would face a hard time defending against the wind and a still lively KV attack - and that's the way it turned out ! Kennet hit back to make it 3 - 2 and then 3 - 3, as Barton lost their way a bit in the second half and had to rely on some excellent defensive work and goal keeping to keep us at level pegging. While we wobbled for times and played in an anxious fashion for spells - we ultimately battled through for a magnificent point. Lets be fair - KV are no mean team and they played their full part in a thrilling and exciting game to watch. Would we have been happy with a draw at the start - yes !
Did we play our socks off for most of the game - yes ! Were we (by far) the better team for all the first half - yes ! Did we battle like Billy in the second half - you bet ! In context, this might have been our best result ever - and we will need to produce the same level of commitment in our last few games. This performance and result was a credit to the boys and we also maybe we got the little bit of luck you need from time to time, which maybe we didn't get in other close encounters earlier on in the season. Barton literally had 14 heroes out there on Saturday - a real team effort - but none more so than skipper Joe Ritchie, who played the game of his life and George Legg in goal, who made several great saves but also kept cool, calm and collected under pressure in the second half.
Overall - this was a tremendous performance and we might have even nicked it in the closing minutes. Some of our play in the first half was a joy to watch - quick incisive passing up front and solid at the back. A draw was probably a fair result at the end of the day. Such was the sense of exhilaration at the end, we forgot the warm down altogether and even bringing down our smart new red and black nets in the rain didn't seem to be a problem ! From a windswept Turhanms Farm, this is an immensely proud..... Touchline Dad

Caversham 2 v 2 Barton A
Barton A had to come from behind twice today to secure a point. Despite having the lion share of the possession and playing some nice football at times a dogged defence held out. One nil down at half time george Batts taped in from close range after good work on the right from Josh Shurvill. A long range thump from about forty five yards found its way into the far corner to make it two one before Josh Helmores equaliser close to time. Still unbeaten..... Just.
Under 9s Chronicle Cup Semi Finals
Barton Rovers 2 v 0 AFC Henley Flyers
Brilliant from the off today the boys controlled the game with good passing and movement with our best moves being created by our wingers William Frank and Jayden Bogle, who both went past their markers countless times creating good shooting opportunities and supplying cross after cross. Despite the 8 corners and many shots in the first half we could not break down a well organised Henley defence, with special praise going to their goal keeper who saved bravely many times. Towards the end of the first half we attacked maybe a little too enthusiastically with both of our centre backs joining the attacks and we nearly paid for this when Henley broke twice and nearly scored with Ben coming off his line to save.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Henley defending as if their lives depended on it. Although we created chance after chance we either rushed the shot or dwelled on the ball to long and you couldn't help thinking this is not going to be our day, however the break through came when Oliver Higgs beat the keeper with a low left foot shot. The goal forced Henley to attack which created more room for Barton going forward with Max Robbins slotting the ball home to make sure of the result.
Our MOTM was Ryo Masuda who as always controlled the game from the back with his centre back partner Luca. Today Ryo had a chance to bring the ball out of defence and join in our attacks which he done brilliantly.
Thanks to our referee Lillo and all the Dads that helped with the nets, much appreciated.
YOU ARE IN THE FINAL LADS!!!!!!!!!!!
Under 12c Chronicle Cup Semi Finals
Barton Rovers C 2 v 1 AFC Newbury
Yessssssssss! After years of trying – in summer tournaments and the league cup - we have finally made it to a final! It was a fantastic team effort that got us the win over AFC Newbury, who we have now played three times in the last four matches. We have lost all our previous encounters with Newbury who are a strong, organised side, so to get the win was an amazing testament to the spirit, determination and work rate of the boys. We have a big squad of 16 players but each and every one played a vital role in sending us through to the FINAL! Nathan set us on our way with two goals, both of them set up by Marc.
The first came on 26 minutes when Marc’s right wing throw found it’s way to Nathan in the Newbury penalty area. He hooked a shot goalwards and the ball nestled in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Soon after Nathan had a shot cleared off the line when it looked like he was about to double our lead, but nonetheless, it was good to lead at the break. Midway through the second half, we netted again. Marc provided another assist, this time with the perfect through ball, and Nathan helped himself to goal number 2 of the day. It turned out to be the crucial strike as Newbury reduced the deficit later, with a long shot that beat Maciej who almost got a hand to the ball.
The game ended with the utmost pressure from Newbury. In the final few minutes including 3 added on, Newbury forced five consecutive corners, and almost every player on the pitch - including both goalkeepers - were camped in our own penalty area for what seemed like forever. But again the lads dug so deep and held out for a memorable victory. Cue the celebrations at the final whistle. It was a really competitive game and neutrals watching said it was very entertaining, both teams really gave it a go. Goalkeeper Maciej Lipowski was in great form throughout and he bagged the parents man of the match award. He looked very confident between the sticks.
Defensively we were very sound with the centre backs dominant – Aaron received the nod from us for the managers man of the match award, and his twin brother Clayton was not far behind him. Alex Moulsley, Sean, Connor and Ross also weighed in with very confident, assured performances at the back. Our midfield did a great job: Matthew, Jordan, Marc, Tristan, Joseph and Toby all created opportunities and tracked back when needed to help out their team mates. Nathan is starting to look very comfortable in the strikers role, and it’s still early days, but 3 in 3 is a fabulous return.
He was really well supported by Alex Winn and Ryan, who competed for everything up front. We are really proud of all the lads. To reach the final in our first season of 11 aside football is incredible, so a huge well done to you all.
Savour the moment.

HELMORE FIRES BARTON INTO FINAL
AFC Newbury 0 v 1Barton Rovers
Barton progress into the final thanks to a goal on the half hour by Josh Helmore. Barton never really looked troubled as a solid back four kept Newbury at bay. On a blustery day Barton had spells where they passed the ball very well and created lots of openings but failed to convert apart from the one. A goal was ruled out by the oppositions linesman for an alledged foul on keeper which would have given Josh Helmore his brace. Barton charge on into the final and remain unbeaten in both cup and league.

I would like to thank Jamie McCrossan for taking control of the team and arrangements on Sunday i owe you one!!
We done it the hard way again by all accounts. One Nil down at half time after a laboured first half, Jamie made changes at half time which paid off immediately with Oliver Higgs adding to his 23 goals this season slotting in the equalizer with virtually his first touch. We then went on to create further chances with Harry Peters our MOTM at the heart of Bartons best work with Oliver hitting the cross bar later in the half. The break through and eventual winner coming from the impressive Kai Masuda scoring another vital goal.
A real team effort today from the players and the parents who helped with the nets, so many thanks to you guys. Also thanks to John Staker for refereeing the game.
Another step closer, see you all at training.

Kennet Valley 3 v 3 Barton Rovers
What a game!! This is what kids football should all be about in my view. Competitive within the laws of the game, skillful, attacking, end to end, nail biting and some quality goals from both teams.
We played very well in the opening 20 mins and went one nil up with a well taken goal by Finbar after good inter play between Dan & Ben. We could have scored a couple more but the K-Valley keeper did well for them. They equalised from a corner where we felt our keeper was pushed but the ref never saw it and then they had a small purple patch and actually went 2-1 up with a really well taken goal.
We then got our game together and again created two, one on one situations with their keeper but both efforts were placed just wide of the goal. We equalised with a scrambled goal and then took a deserved lead only for K-Valley to get their 3rd goal to make it all square.
In the dying moments Dan was, we think, fouled in the box and we should maybe of had a pen but the ref waved play on.
Still all to play for and it is never over til it's over.
Good stuff lads.

Barton Rovers A 3 v 1 AFC Newbury
The game started with Newbury having a lot of possession but could not penetrate a resolute Barton defence. Barton finally got into there stride and put some great passing moves together and opened the scoring with Josh Helmore chipping the keeper to go one nil up on 30 mins. A penalty early in the second half was dispatched well by George Batts to go two up. Josh Helmore headed in a third 10 mins later and apart from a late consolation for Newbury, Barton were not really troubled. Again our defence was very impressive today, Newbury hardly got a sniff.Well done boys yet another win, and still unbeaten.
Barton Rovers A 2 v 0 Eldon Celtic
Eldon started the stronger and
looked really up for this game. They put
Barton under a lot of pressure in the first
ten minutes but could not penetrate our solid
defence. Barton then started to play the football we
are capable of and we began to open Eldon up. Barton
went one up when James Szutenbergs headed corner was
fluffed by Gina Tonna in Eldon's goal.
The second half saw Eldon come hard at
us but again they could not get through
what I consider the best defence in the league.
again after Eldon had a strong spell, Barton started
opening up Eldon and a great through ball by Dan Green
allowed Josh Helmore in to thump home number two
and pretty much finish Eldon off. Another
big scalp for us, still unbeaten. Very good win. Credit
to everyone that played in the game, you all worked
really hard. Well done.
Cup Game Under 9's
Barton Rovers 3 v 1 Thatcham Harriers
A hard fought win today against a hard working Thatcham side. We started the game with a new partnership in centre midfield of Harry and Zidan, with Max wide left and Jayden wide right and Ryo and Luca playing centre back with Ben in goal.
The first half was a real cup tie, both teams trying to attack, it was end to end stuff. One highlight was a great run and shot from Zidan which would have been goal of the season. Zidan took possession of the ball just past the half way line, went past two Thatcham players before shooting from 20 yards, the ball went just inches over the left hand post. Nil Nil at half time.
We started the second half with the same 7, but within a minute of the restart found ourselves 1 nil down after Thatcham took advantage of a mix up at the back with a cool finish. We made 3 changes immediately with Oliver and Kai coming into centre midfield with Harry and Zidan moving out to the wings, and Toby coming on for Luca at the back. We took a couple of minutes to settle after the goal, but the fresh legs started to dominate the midfield breaking forward and creating several chances, and it was Kai who got us on level terms with a very well taken goal. We never looked back after that with the excellent Thatcham midfield starting to tire. We went in front from another good move with Harry slotting home from a tight angle. We then scored a further goal from an up and under by Oliver which gave us a 2 goal cushion.
Our man of the match was Zidan, who was outstanding from the off, can there be a faster player in the league??? Well Done Zidan.
Not a great performance today, but all in all we must be proud of the way we came back AGAIN against a very good Thatcham team.
Thank you to Thatcham for another game played in a great spirit, hopefully we will see them in the final!!!

Barton Roves U9 2 v 1 Boyne Hill Blades
Really good performance today, the score line didn't really reflect our possession and control of the game. The wind was a big factor with Boyne Hill winning the toss and deciding to kick with the wind in the first half. Despite of this we attacked from the off with Kai, Oliver and Harry in midfield winning more than their fare share of tackles, bursting forward and passing brilliantly creating some good chances one of which hitting the cross bar.
Special praise to our man of the match Jayden Bogle who was outstanding from start to finish. All this considering Jayden is playing up a year, and is 2 months short of being 2 years younger than our oldest player. Jayden did not stop running playing wide on the right of midfield, going past players, crossing and more importantly scoring both our goals.
After Jayden scored our first we continued to control the game, when Boyne Hill did manage to clear their lines, our defence tried to play their normal passing game, unfortunately some of our passing was under powered in the strong wind and Boyne Hill intercepted a short pass and equalised against the run of play, 1-1 at half time.
Centre back Ryo Masuda made it to half time carrying an injury and was replaced by Toby Staker. The second half being very much like the first, William Frank and Max Robbins coming on soon after the re-start, and it was William who won a 50-50 tackle in the centre of midfield, looked up and pass a great through ball for Max to run onto, Max looked up and played in Jayden who slotted the ball home, get in!
The game finished 2 - 1 the only real scare in the second half a mammoth goal line scramble with Ben our goal keeper saving bravely with feet kicking all over the place.
Well Done Lads
Also thanks to our ref John Staker who done a brilliant job.

Barton Rovers progress to the semi final thanks to a well taken lob by George Batts after a great lay off from Josh Helmore. The game was a very tight affair with both teams creating a few chances. Eldon were unlucky after a goal was ruled out for a corner taken before the whistle was blown. Barton held firm to go into the next round. Shinfield Ranger 0 v 0 Barton Rovers
Hello All!!
A nil nil draw, very rare at this age group. Overall we cannot have many complaints, our boys tried very hard to break down a team set up for a draw, as one parent reminded me of what Jose once said 'they parked the bus'. Full credit must go to Shinfield Rangers who as a team defended very well closing us down quickly and always getting behind the ball, special praise to their goal keeper who must of made at least 5 brilliant saves.
As for our lads they played to win the game, always pushing forward to get the winner so much so that Ben in goal to my horror appeared in Shinfield's box for one of our many corners. The only thing i would say is that in their determination to win the game, the guys started to take on the opposition one on one to often when they should have looked to pass. Apart from that William Frank won MOTM for a great first half display, and well done to Toby Staker for passing the ball out of defence when he could.
The other results went our way this weekend so we are still in a great position. See you all at training!!!

Happy New Year!!!!
Barton Rovers U9's 5 v 1 Boyne Hill
What a great start to the new year against the second placed team. Barton dominated the game from the first whistle with the impressive Harry Peters scoring within 2 minutes, with further goals from Oliver Higgs, William Frank, Max Robbins and another strike from Harry Peters.
Todays game was a real team performance with the full 11 boys in the squad playing a part in the game. Oliver Higgs, Kai Masuda and Max Robbins kept Boyne Hills danger man very quiet working very hard in the centre of midfield. Zidan Akers, William Frank, Harry Peters and Jayden Bogle worked the wide areas very well, breaking forward and delivering great crosses and shots causing the Boyne Hill defence all sorts of problems. When Boyne Hill did break forward Ryo Masuda, Luca Albanese and Toby Staker defended very well, not committing themselves to early and always looking to pass the ball out of defence to keep possession. Last but not least Ben Gibbs in goal who came off his line 3 times to intercept through balls and always looked to throw the ball to feet again to allow Barton to keep possession of the ball.
Also a big well done to our lads for not reacting to the swearing and name calling from some of the Boyne Hill lads, you gave the best response to this sort of thing by putting 5 past them, well done.
Keep it going Lads!!! - Paul

AFC Caversham A 0-2 Barton Rovers u12 A
This was a very good win against the defending champions on a massive, sloping and bumpy old pitch. The score does not really reflect the amount chances we created which is becoming a slight concern to me.
We seem to create plenty of good chances but we are not really killing off teams which always gives the opposition a chance to sneak a goal and get something from a game in which we have dominated.
But hey hoe, you boys never cease to amaze me with your never say die attitude, much improved football ability and team spirit.
The game started with a well respected minutes silence for the late Derby Rose and this win was for him from the lads.
Good goals this week from Ben Partridge & Finbar Bourke, Josh Gilland was again outstanding at the back, Robert Gerrard got better as the game progressed, Sam Ellis worked his socks off and Josh Morris had a very impressive debut in midfield. The rest of the lads were all solid but we NEED to improve our passing as a whole unit.
Keep up the good work lads.
Cheers - JP

Barton Rovers C 4 v 3 Boyne Hill Hornets
What a thrilling game. Both sides took 10 minutes or so to settle down, but once the players found their feet, the game really opened up with chances at both ends. Matthew continued his amazing scoring run, by claiming his 11th goal in as many games. We pressured Boyne Hill following a throw on the right wing and the ball fell to Matthew who finished in style – the ball sailing across the keeper and into the opposite corner of the goal.
Matthew had another great chance when he stretched at a shot that had got away, and the ball was trickling towards the line, with the keeper beaten, but there was enough time for the ball to be cleared. However, he then set up his brother Marc who raced through to finish emphatically past the Hornets goalie as he came rushing out. 2-0. It was then Clayton’s turn to run at the keeper but this time he saved well.
Into the second half and our third goal arrived when Alex Winn’s shot was parried by the keeper as he cut in from the left. The loose ball was thumped home by Joseph, who sent it back that way, and it cannoned off a defender as it whizzed into the net. So 3-0 and it was all good. It wasn’t one way traffic though and we had to defend well and rely on Boyne Hill missing a few chances themselves. Maciej had a great game in goal, and his kicking took a lot of pressure off us. However he couldn’t do much about a great shot from the Hornets that looped over his head to give them hope they could salvage something from the game.
Matthew however, was determined to get our three goal advantage back and he took on and passed several players before unleashing a great shot that hit the side netting. Unlucky! Then back up the other end Boyne Hill hit the foot of our post. We did get a fourth and it was a really stylish effort. There must have been more than 10 passes in this particular move around their box, we were trying to open them up but we were patient with it, and sure enough after moving the ball around long enough the chance fell to Marc for his second goal of the game. Brilliant stuff!
So the game was heading for the final few minutes, we were 4-1 to the good, but then we just seemed to lose concentration at the back. Boyne hill were sharp to the end and made this superiority count by scoring twice in the last two minutes. All of a sudden we were hanging on. At 4-3 we managed to work an attack to just get the ball out of our half and that was it – a win, but by the narrowest of margins.
Ryan was our choice for man of the match because his passing and vision was excellent. Jordan took the parents award, because of his determined display at the back, also in the crucial last 10 minutes he was a force going forward.
All of the boys put so much into this game, so well done to all of you.
The Event: The Barton Christmas Internal Tournament
The Venue: The RFC Dome
The Date: New Years Eve
I really hope that everyone enjoyed the day as much as me. The venue was fantastic, the boys were brilliant, the parental support was excellent and some of the football played was very eye catching.
The teams were made up of the under 11's and under 12's and we had ten 5 a side teams playing in two leagues. Some of the goals scored were amazing and every game was played in a fun spirit which was very refreshing to see.
It was a Reading v Newcastle final with Nick Clarks Newcastle the eventual winners over Joanne Partridge's Reading.
A big thank you to Garry Pugh and Simon Hinsley who were the referees all day. Thank you also to the 10 parents who managed a team each. Thank you to the players for behaving really well. Thank you to Geoff Warner & Reading FC for letting us use the fantastic facility. Thanks to Barton for supplying the medals. Thanks to John White for the tournament format
See you all next year.
Cheers

A good win today with just 7 players available. Oliver Higgs and Kai Masuda scoring two goals each with Toby Staker winning MOTM for a fine display at the back. Also a great job today by Ben Gibbs in goal, when you had the ball in your hands you were always looking to throw or roll the ball to your team mates setting up attacks rather than the hopeful punt up field.
Well done boys for going into Christmas un-defeated, that is a real achievement in your first season considering some of the other sides played league football last season. Your passing, movement and general awareness has made you the team to beat, keep that going and you will win the league.

Boyne Hill Hornets 0 v 4 Barton Rovers C
This was the first game we have played where the opposition could not field a full team, in fact they only had nine players. This felt a bit awkward, but after we were given a lesson by the leaders in our previous game, and had last weeks fixtures cancelled due to the weather, we were keen to get this match under way.
This was probably best described as a game of two halves. We toiled a bit in the first half and didn’t really grab the game by the scruff of the neck, like we did after the break. Fair play to Boyne Hill, they really gave it a go and wanted to make it difficult for us. Clayton who made his first appearance in goal made one cracking save and they had a couple of other chances but we weren’t giving them much space deep into our half which was pleasing. Clayton’s goal kicking was good and that took the pressure off our defence.
We did score two goals in the opening period. Joseph, who was dangerous throughout put a perfect cross into the box. Matthew gratefully received this gift, controlled the ball and on the half volley sent it across the keeper and into the far side of the net. Matthew then turned provider and threaded the perfect ball behind the Hornets defence, which Alex Winn raced on to. He burst forward and mindful of the previous one on one encounters, he smashed the ball into the corner of the goal. I was right behind it and it was one of those shots that you just knew was going to nestle sweetly in the back of the net.
In the second half Joseph scored an excellent quick fire double to put us in control and soon after Alex Winn thought he had bagged his second goal, when he side footed home Joseph’s cross, but it was ruled out for offside. Marc’s shot then squirmed between the keepers legs and appeared well over the line but as the ref and assistant didn’t see it, we weren’t getting that one either! Never mind, 4-0 and we were looking good value for that lead. Our passing by this time was superb, and it was good to see us take the easy pass backwards or sideways, to retain the ball, when a more direct forward pass may have been the more exciting option. Jordan sent a shot crashing towards the goal from outside the area, and Aaron also had a great chance but couldn’t quite get his shot off.
Second half goalie Maciej only touched the ball three times such was our dominance, with the back line of Connor, Nathan, Alex Moulsley and Ross all standing firm. Ryan combined really well with the wide men, particularly Joseph, and Toby made his debut for us, and almost scored at the end.
So we finish 2007 in second place, bearing in mind we have played only a handful of 11 aside games that is a fantastic achievement – well done lads.
Merry Christmas everyone, see you at training this Friday (21st) and the drinks after.

Barton Rovers 3 v 2 Thatcham Tornadoes
Top of the table clash and we started great. I,ve said it before and I will say it again, pass the ball simple and you will create. That's exactly what happened, we were all over Thatcham in the first few mins.
Against the run of play Thatcham got a free kick and poked the ball home to go one up. Two mins later after great passing the ball got to Josh Helmore who after a shimme or two let rip with a thumping drive from twenty yards that was to strong for the keeper and found the bottom corner to make it one each on 14 mins.
Barton had the better of the first half and a great break down the right hand side saw Liam cross a beauty that Louis dispatched with his head to make it two one. Second half saw Thatcham really up their game and it was end to end for a bit until the 62nd minute Louis beat his man and fed a neat pass into Josh Helmore who again made space to unleashed a pile driver that no keeper in the world would have saved.
Thatcham to their credit had a go back and scored on 68 mins. But today we showed just what a good side we are. Well done lads, unbeaten and playing better football every game. I should mention the back four were as solid as ever which is a credit to them and our new keeper Tom Marshal who had a superb debut, always in the right place at the right time. Gyles didn't really have time to shine but looked very lively when he came on.
Great result boys well done. Dave Clarke.

Barton A 2 v 0 Kennet Valley A
I thought that both teams could take a lot of credit for a tight but entertaining match played in very difficult conditions. As a team we did play some very good passing football at times which allowed us to create three or four reasonably good goal scoring opportunities in the first half and our defence looked rocked solid most of the time. Jack Wilkins scored with a well taken header to send us in 1 nil up at half time.
The second half was more of the same really with our midfield looking very impressive today. After some good work by Sam Ellis, Benjamin Hinsley scored his first goal of the season to make the final score 2-0. We passed at the right time, dribbled at the right time, ran with the ball at the right time, made space at the right time and competed at ALL times. Well done lads, you deserved that win today.
See you Wednesday at training. - JP

Barton Rovers C 1 v 9 Laurel Park
Well… we’ve had better days! For the first five minutes we contained runaway leaders Laurel Park, but their first real push forward ended up with them taking the lead after we hesitated a bit too much at the crucial moment. That then set the tone with us having a fair amount of possession but not delivering the killer ball to make a difference. Our visitors would win the ball back and then come onto us very strongly, and we couldn’t deal with them, as their movement on and off the ball was sharp.
At times we didn’t help ourselves but the boys didn’t let their heads drop, and despite the atrocious weather conditions, gave it their all. Shortly before half time we found ourselves 6-0 down and injuries to goalkeeper Maciej and winger Matthew. The last bit of action of the half saw us win a corner. Aaron and Clayton played it short, swapped passes a couple of times, jinked their way through and Aaron then saw Alex Moulsley lurking on the edge of the box. He laid the ball back to Alex who let fly with a rasping shot that curled into the top corner of the goal. It was a great goal and worthy of more than a consolation. This was Alex’s first goal for Barton and well worth the wait! So a five goal deficit at half time, the same as in the first game between us this season.
In the second half we really gave it a go. Sean put himself forward to play in goal following the injury to Maciej, and he made some really great saves. We had to ask several players to play out of position, but everyone stuck to their task. Later on in the game, after Laurel Park had weathered our storm, they hit back with a further three goals to make the final score 9-1 in their favour. And yes, the vidiprinter would say 9 (NINE)!
I know the conditions were the same for both teams, but it’s a lot easier to play in weather like this when you are many goals to the good, so well done to our team for battling on; in the second half we really did play with a lot of spirit, and our passing was much better.
Alex Moulsley took our award for man of the match because not only was his goal out of the top drawer, he defended well during the onslaught. And he’d been ill for the previous three weeks. Sean took the parents award for his heroics in goal – hope your Mum enjoyed all the washing you brought home with you Sean!

Barton turned in a storming second half performance over at Lower Early on a rain swept and windy afternoon - enough to warm the hearts, but eventually went down 9 - 2 to a well organised and quick passing Laurel Park team. This was a game of two halves - quite literally !
In the first half, playing in terrible conditions, we started the game well and went 1 up, through a well taken goal from the "Bease Meister" and also created as number of decent half chances before LP hit back with two well worked goals. From that point, with the weather worsening, and with play actually being stopped for a few minutes at one stage, we played some rather sloppy football and handed LP a number of chances on a plate - which they had no hesitation in accepting.
We found ourselves at half time 6 - 1 down and facing a real up hill battle to come out of the game with anything at all. We had not played that badly, but the old problem of switching off at critical moments had reared its head again and our failure to defend as a team with any real conviction at times had cost us dear.
Frustrating !!! Callum probably best summed it all up when he demolished most of the half time oranges single handedly !
Having said, that the second half was a completely different story - the weather actually brightened up and so did our football ! Skipper Joe Ritchie scored a very well taken second, we hit the bar, carved out some very good chances and looked more solid as a unit at the back and in midfield. It was asking a lot to come back in to the game, but we gave it a real go and more than matched LP for long periods if not outplayed them. We kept it going right to the end and can look back on the second half with a good deal of pride and credit.
Plus points ? Lots - especially in the second half, there were plenty, as we really took the game by the scruff of the neck and looked as if we might actually go on and "win the second half". A stirring performance from all of the boys. Other positives - George Legg making his debut in goal looked assured, made some great stops and came off his line well - and seems to have fitted in quickly all round.James Williamson did increasingly well in the second half. The rest of the team all can take credit as to the way we battled away in the second half and played some great football in to the bargain.
Negatives - well, we looked at 6's and 7's at times in the first half and gave away some easy possession all round the pitch. We will have to keep working at this. Communication in the back 4 and with the midfield - an old chestnut I am afraid, and again we have to keep working at this too. Did we warm up as a team as well as we could have done - or did we want to do our own thing ? That 15 minutes before a game is critical as we know - get that right, and we are always going to start the game well. You will know yourself whether you did or not........
Overall - this was a disappointing result - as no little effort went in, to the second half, in particular. We chose to do it the hard way y'day boys - but the way we played in little spells in the first half and for all of the second half gave great encouragement. Keep at it Barton - even the LP Manager admitted afterwards that the score was not a true reflection of how the game had gone, and we are a better team than we probably showed yesterday. We know it, you know it, even the opposition know it - what we have to do is go out and prove it !
From a very wet and windy Laurel Park, this is......

Thatcham 2 v 3 Barton Rovers
What a great game !!!!!
Thatcham dominated the first half, closing us down winning every tackle and pushing us back causing us to panic, play out of position and forget what we are good at - passing and moving. Thatcham's first goal was a hopeful punt up field which sailed over Ben's head into the back of the net, their second being a well worked move which ended in a powerful shot and they fully deserved to be 2 nil up at half time, Ben in goal kept us in the game with several good saves.
This was new territory for the boy's having only been behind once in a game this season. We had a half time team talk about staying in position, marking up early and relaxing when in possession and from the second half whistle we looked like a different team. Man of the match Kai Masuda got us back into the game with a great header and from that moment we continued to push forward and got back on level terms when Kai slotted the ball home from a goal mouth scramble.
The Thatcham heads had dropped by this point although they did have one effort which went just wide, however they could not stop Harry Peters scoring the winner with 5 minutes to go GET IN!!!
It was great to see the boys celebrate as a team, although the ref had to stop the game because Harry could not get his shirt back on after her took it off in celebration (we will ask your mum to run on and dress you next time).
The game finished 3-2 with full credit to Thatcham for making us welcome and playing their part in a great game. I think we can take a lot out of the game today - never give up, play as a team and believe in yourselves.

Well Done Boys !!!

Theale 0 - 2 Barton A
The first ten minutes of the game I thought we played some excellent stuff, we passed the ball well, used the width of the pitch and raced into a quick 2 goal lead. Harry Rose scored the 1st with a well taken finish but Sam Clark scored a fab team goal which started with Josh passing the ball back to the goal keeper, Aaron, who passed it back to Josh who in turn passed to Sam Ellis who delivered a quality pass to Sam Clark who made no mistake at the far post. The next ten minutes I felt were quite scrappy as they were still shell shocked and we started to think it was going to be walk-over. The last ten minutes of the half were very good once more as we started to pass the easy option again.
In the 2nd half, Theale to their credit never gave up and made a real game of it although we missed a couple of good chances including a penalty.
When you consider that I made 5 changes from last week, asked several players to play in different roles than usual plus we used the 5 rolling subs rule to the max I am really pleased with the effort shown.
Keep up the good work but there are certain players that may need to look at their general attitude sooner rather than later but more about that in the newsletter on Wednesday.
Cheers

Thatcham Tornadoes 7 v 5 Barton Rovers
In a week where there has been much gnashing of teeth about what's wrong with English football, if the powers that be from the FA had been at this game they would have concluded "not much" - as we played out a 12 goal thriller against old rivals Thatcham Tornadoes.
This game was the ultimate ding dong thriller, and Barton displayed a level of skill, commitment to the cause and all round performance to make the heart sing. Move over highly paid Premier league stars, this is where the real heart and soul of the game exists. And Barton Under 13 B are at the front of the queue !
Barton looked the absolute and total biz in our new sponsored rain tops [thanks to Simon for these !] and while we fell behind early on to 2 Thatcham goals, we went on to play some great football and pulled 1 back just before half time with a super move, finished off by Jordan "Bad Boy" Blake.
At this stage, Barton had created a whole host of chances and dominated the game with Big George up front taking the game to the opposition at every chance - great stuff ! We must have created at least another 6 good chances to score. You were left thinking if we could get back on level terms, we would surely go on and take the game by the scruff of the neck.
But we fell in to bad habits again just before and just after half time which saw Thatcham extend their lead to 3 - 1 and then 4 - 2 as we switched off at critical moments of the game. But Barton also showed a resilience and steel in their game to be proud of and we kept the scoreboard ticking over at a frantic rate, as we got back to 4 - 3 and then again having gone behind again at 5 - 3 came back to 5 - 4 and then incredibly got back in to the game at 6 - 5 with just a few minutes left. At this stage, Thatcham looked as if they were out for the count with Barton standing over them ready to claim a famous victory - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 and out !!! But in the end, we ran out of time and steam and finished 7 - 5 losers, but this was a fantastic game to watch from the sidelines.
It is often tempting to look at things through our own eyes, but we deserved so much more out of this game. We played all the football and looked dangerous throughout the duration. While we got stretched at the back as we chased the game towards the end, for long periods we had the Thatcham attack sewn up, and they only really looked dangerous when we switched off. Some of our approach play was excellent. Callum took his hat trick well [again !] and all others made big contributions. Jordan scored a cracker and Joe Beasley took the ball and half the Thatcham defence over the line for his effort. James Williamson made a promising league debut and was involved at both ends of the pitch.
It was tempting at the end to look for external influences to see why we lost this one - but we must also look at our own game too. There were so many positives to take from this to quote a well known Irish coaching guru [no, not Martin O Neill !!] and we have to focus on these - we played some great football, we never gave up and pegged back the home team time after time - and scored some cracking good goals in to the bargain. But we all know that we collectively switched off too many times at key moments - and this is down to us, not anything or any one else. If we can sort this out - as a team - we can go and pick up points for the duration of the season.
Barton - you were great today, you know it, I know it and your parents know it too. By the way, if any one has seen a pair of Celtic socks, can they let Rich know please ! Hail, hail !!!!!
So who need Crouch, when we have Mackie ? Who needs Lampard when we have Ritchie, who needs Gerrard when we have the "Bease Meister" - I could go on, but you get the drift !
From a surprisingly mild, sunny, picturesque and dry Douai Abbey, this is.....
..... a totally drained and exhausted, yet very proud, Touch Line Dad

Barton Rovers 1 v 0 AFC Caversham
This was quite a tight encounter, Caversham looked very quick on the break at times, but when we got our passing game going we created chance after chance. Tommy scored a great goal that was unfairly ruled offside. Half time nil nil. In the second half we had a lot of possession and finally broke through with a great passing move that ended with louis slotting home for the only goal of the game. Our defence were very good today, Jake making some vital tackles as usual. Thanks to Guissepe for putting Louis dislocated finger back in. Well done lads still unbeaten.

Barton A 0 - 3 Cold Ash A
This score line did not reflect the game in my opinion. We dominated the game in the 1st half without really creating too many chances. We had loads of possession but just died a bit in the final third of the pitch. Having said that we did not look like conceding either until a long punt down the pitch with a strong, swirling wind behind it caused us a problem. The ball was not cleared, bit of a scramble took place and I thought we were slow to react to the loose ball which they stuck away just before half time, against the run of play.
In the 2nd half again we were pressing hard and had a couple of good chances to score but were unable to find the net. Cold ash scored on the break with two, good long range efforts in the last ten minutes whilst we were pushing forward to get back in the game.
I was really proud, once more, of the Barton players and supporters conduct this week. We did not react to any comments made by certain parties. I was also pleased that we stuck to our passing game and did not resort to just whacking the ball anywhere. This may have cost us the game but in the long term it was the right thing to do!
Learning points from the game:
a) Do not take more touches than you need, particularly on a stick pitch
b) Take more care in your passing technique and accuracy
c)Be alive at all times in both box's and react before the opposition do
d) NO MORE FOUL THROWS, PLEASE!!!
Over all, well done and good luck next week. There is a long way to go yet this season.

Barton Rovers C 3 v 0 Cold Ash B
Last week we had perfect playing conditions. How different it was today. Cold, wet and windy. But credit to the boys, who must have been FREEZING, as they stuck to their task and in the second half in particular, played some great attacking football.
Our visitors, Cold Ash B, had the first real chance of the match and almost scored from it. A lobbed shot from a long way out had Tristan scampering back, but thankfully the ball bounced over the bar. Probably blown by the wind!
The next chance was ours; Clayton’s corner found twin brother Aaron and his flicked header was looping inside the far post when a Cold Ash defender knocked it off the line. So unlucky, but well defended.
Much of the play was through the middle and both teams were running into each other as the play was quite congested. When we did get the ball out to the wings, we looked like we could create something but we didn’t fashion too many clear cut chances. But a minute before half time, Sean Ward sent a rasping drive goalwards from just inside the area and it nestled inside the far post. This shot was almost a carbon copy of one of his efforts last week that didn’t go in, so the moral of the story is Sean, if at first you fail, try again! A great strike, 1-0.
So half time, and a similar chat to last week and… the same result ie, much better passing and once again strong on the flanks. Our second goal arrived when Alex Winn broke free. He took the ball on, but Cold Ash keeper Nathan Pagliaroli came out and made a brave save at Alex’s feet. It was great goalkeeping because Alex looked like he would score, but fortunately for us the ball broke to Matthew who scored his eighth goal in eight games. Interestingly this set the pattern for much of the remainder of the game, because we played some great stuff, but Cold Ash had their keeper to thank, because he made a series of stunning saves, particularly from Alex who got himself into loads of great situations. Not only that but they played some good through balls that we had trouble cutting out, but we managed to mop up, or Maciej would make a good save – he really is becoming a good goalkeeper himself.
Matthew scored our third goal, a good strike that the keeper failed to control this time, and that was it. Another good show: Connor is growing in confidence and was solid again today, Nathan was strong also, Marc’s controlling the midfield, Ross was very steady, Ryan’s has found his touch, Jordan seems to pop up everywhere and Aaron and Clayton showed just how lively they can be. Joseph got our man of the match as he was superb on the wing whilst the parents gave their award to Sean who scored a great goal and was solid at the back.
Great performance lads. Enjoy the lie in next Sunday!

Caversham AFC United 0 v 2 Barton Rovers
After a perfectly observed two minutes silence to mark Remembrance Day, we were soon into our stride at Caversham AFC United. As early as the second minute a great move involving Mr Utility Jordan Stringer, covering at left back, saw him play a great ball into Alex Winn in a forward left position. Alex controlled the ball superbly, beat his man and ran into the box squaring the ball for a shooting opportunity which eventually fell to Marc Langham who stretched to fire the ball past the dive of the home keeper. 1-0 - great start! We were buzzing for the first 10 minutes and we restricted Caversham to just one decent chance but Tristan saved superbly, when one on one with their striker, and he snuffed out the chance.
Aaron then had two great opportunities for his maiden goal, one was struck at the keeper, and the other went wide, but we were in the ascendancy. Just before half time, Sean sent a half volley flying towards the goal, following a corner, but this too went straight at the grateful stopper. As the half progressed Caversham got more into the game though and we had to defend well to keep them out, Tristan making some vital interceptions.
In the second period we picked up the pace again. Sean by the end of the game had 5 on target shots, not bad for a centre back, and he had the keeper make one spectacular diving save. Joseph burst through and charged into a one on one situation but his shot cannoned off a defender’s foot who was making a challenge having got back just in the nick of time. But soon after, our lead was doubled as Matt jinked his way through and scored a fine solo goal for his 7th strike in as many games – what a run he’s on. But again, it wasn’t all one way traffic, and this time it was second half goalie Maciej’s turn to make two brave saves to protect his goal. We had the opportunity to go three up when presented with a penalty when Marc was brought down in the box, but Nathan’s spot kick was rolled just past the wrong side of the post. Nathan had such a good game that it didn’t really matter.
It was a great performance by all the boys. The most pleasing thing was the way we passed the ball around - if we couldn’t move the ball forward, we would go back or sideways, which is what we have been working on so much, but we’ve never really sustained this approach in a game before, as at times this season we have been more rushed. Today we saw so many overlapping passes and lots of chances. Our man of the match was the engine in midfield: Marc. However the parents vote was tied between full backs Connor and Jordan, so they both get a trophy for the week. Other positives are that the twins are getting used to their new team mates - both Aaron and Clayton showed they are great signings for us, and Ryan was brilliant: his best game for us. It really did all click into place today.
Very proud.

Barton Rovers A 4 v 1 Twyford Comets
Today we re-discovered our passing game.
As a team we worked very well together. Communication was good and all positive. After 7 minutes Tommy put us 1 up after a succession of neat, quick passes. Twyford were very resistant. Daniel was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions, then we went 2 up as Josh Helmore rounded the keeper well. A great move down the left led to Liam taping in from close range and an own goal wrapped up a comfortable win.
Again the defence were very good today, Antonio played very well today and did a good job as captain. Tommy had one of his best games yet. Well done all, it was a great team effort. Still unbeaten in the league, keep it up.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE, TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!
Barton Rovers 3 v 2 Caversham A
Two first's this week:
1) This is the first time that we have ever beaten Caversham A, who are also the defending champions by the way
and
2) We are top of the league for the first time in our short history together
That's all fantastic news but now for the not so good news. Our 2nd half display was nowhere near good enough. We let in 2 soft goals, we defended very weakly at times and we did not take at least 3 glorious goal scoring opportunities whilst in front of goal which would have put the game out of sight. Instead we were under real pressure towards the end of the game which was so surprising because in the 1st half we absolutely dominated the game with some great passing moves and well taken goals. If you want to be top lads in April/May when the champions elect get presented with the WINNERS medals then you need to play for the whole match and not parts of it!!
Having said that, it shows how far we have come as a team,i.e. we beat the defending champions, go top and I'm still not satisfied. I know I am a miserable so and so but it's only because I can see how good you can all be, if only you start to believe it yourselves then the sky is the limit for you group of players.
I would like to make a special mention to Jon Davies, Nick Dyer and Brandon Sheldon who did not get on today. You lads were fantastic, always positive and you supported the team really well. I would also like to say well done to Sam Ellis and Benjamin for coming on in a tight match and doing their level best. Good stuff. We must also give Sam Clark a big pat on the back for coming up to support the team in the best possible way, even though he was being rested from today's game. Good stuff Sam.
Going top today is not just about the 11 playing but it's about the whole squad, parents who help out and support us week in and week out. Keep training lads so that we can now try our best to stay on top. It's a pleasure to work with you all.
Cheers - JP

Barton Rovers C 2 Boyne Hill Hornets 1
Our home game against Boyne Hill Hornets was a really tight affair. Overall we were more disjointed than against Goring Robins in our previous match, but we more than made up for that with a real gritty, team effort. The boys dug in and worked so hard in this game and we deserved our narrow 2-1 win, although there was nearly a sting in the tail.
Turnhams was still quite foggy when the game kicked off, but the fog soon gave way to bright sunshine. It did however, leave a skiddy pitch, which contributed to Boyne Hill taking an 11th minute lead. Tristan came sliding out to claim a through ball, but the ball squirmed out of his grasp and the visiting striker found the back of an empty net. Tristan recovered well though and had a great game after that. Joseph then thumped in what looked like an equaliser, but he was slightly offside as the ball came to him. Shame, as it was a fabulous strike from the in-form player. We were making hard work of the game, so on 20 minutes we handed debuts to twins Aaron and Clayton Holloway and they stirred things up a bit and chased down lost causes.
It wasn’t long before Matthew got us back on equal terms, lobbing the keeper from a tight angle, himself pressuring the Hornet’s defence, and getting in amongst them. Shortly after, a lovely move from right to left ended with Aaron’s shot being caught by the keeper.
In the second half Alex Winn grabbed what turned out to be the winner, when he pounced at a corner. The ball was cleared but knocked back in and Alex turned and shot in one move firing the ball into the goal. At the other end, Maciej, now in goal for Tristan, made an absolutely stunning save at the near post to push the ball away for a corner, and maybe once or twice we looked a bit vulnerable, but really it was us doing most of the attacking. Joseph was starting to look very impressive again on the right wing, and Nathan too was looking sharp. All the attack minded players started to link up much better, and defensively we looked quite sound, although we could have cleared the ball a bit quicker in our own penalty area a few times. The final minute though, was where the game’s outcome was settled. Alex Winn raced through one on one with the goal keeper but hit his shot straight at his opponent, and then from our own corner kick, Boyne Hill broke - we had pushed too many players forward - and Alex Moulsley had to deal with two Boyne Hill attackers. They got the better of him, but he delayed them just long enough to allow Maciej to come charging off his line. It was one on one, and the Hornets striker tried to lob Maciej but he plucked the ball out of the air with a safe pair of hands. And that was that! Well done lads, a great team effort.

Westwood Wanderers 4 v 4 Barton Rovers
For the second week running, Barton Under 13 outplayed their opponents for the majority of the game but still couldn't do quite enough to seal the victory that the style and manner of their performance so richly deserved. In the end, while we were a bit disappointed not to get all 3 points from this one, the manner in which we fought back from 3 - 4 down with just a few minutes to spare was fantastic and showed a good deal of character all round the pitch.
Barton started the game in excellent form and by the time we cruised into a 2 goal lead the game could have been done and dusted - as it was Callum Mackie with 2 well taken goals following good passing moves through midfield saw us take command mid way through the first half - but to give Westwood credit they came battling back and made it 2 - 2 by half time as Barton took their foot off the pedal for the last 10 minutes of the half. But Barton stated the second half again well on top and soon Joe "Bomber" Beasley had fired us back in to the lead with a good turn and strong shot from just in side the box - but Westwood had a good spell for 10 minutes and first equalised through an unfortunate own goal and then took the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.
It looked for a few minutes that all our hard work might go unrewarded but back came Barton and we equalised with a corking 20 yard volley from Alex Turnbull to make it 4 - 4. in the final few minutes we might have gone on to win it but only some desperate defending from WW and some bad luck in front of goal prevented us from getting the win that we probably deserved.
There were lots of positives to take from this - all 14 boys involved played their full part to such an extent that it would be impossible to pick out a MOTM for Barton - everyone did so well in their own way. We stood together having gone 3 - 4 down and fought back well to get the point we at least deserved. Not least we played some fantastic stuff at times in the game with slick passing all round the pitch and some stout defending at the back. We created chances galore and one day when we just have a bit more composure in front of goal, we are going to score a bucket load. And we toughed it out when we had to in the second half when WW had their spell of the game as we knew they would at one stage.
All in all - this was a great game to watch and Barton can be pleased with the way that they played and contributed. Well done today boys, you were a credit to yourselves and the team.

Reading Youth 3 v 1 Barton A
For once we started poorly, Reading started well. We just could not bring the ball under control at all and in the 39th minute we were punished when from our own free kick a long clearance route one was put away to put Reading one up.
The second half we started to play a little and saw a lot more possession and from a corner James Szutenberg headed us level. We never stamped our authority on the game. A great ball in by louis led to a great goal by Liam that was deemed off side .Then we were punished with ten minutes to go. The last kick of the match saw a third for reading when we failed to deal with another corner. Jake Smith, James Hawkins & James Szutenberg played well.
The rest of us have to work a lot harder in future.

Barton Rovers 3 v 4 Boyne Hill
Barton went so close on Sunday to pulling off a major victory against high flying Boyne Hill it wasn't true and were only denied in the last few minutes. Remember - this was a team that had handed out to us a 10 - 0 thrashing on the first game of the season. On a wet and dull morning but with the pitch looking a treat, Barton started off like a greyhound out of the traps. By half time, if they had been 4 up it would not have been an injustice at all. As it was, we had to show for our efforts a well deserved 2 - 1 half time lead with a stunning strike from Alex Young [his first for the team and what a cracker it was !] and then a powerful drive from all action skipper Joe Ritchie - a 20 yard "stonker" of an effort if ever there was one.
Added to these were a number of excellent chances which saw the BH keeper tested to the limit and another effort which hit the post and trickled across the goal line before being cleared at the last second. At this stage, it was all Barton who looked to be playing at the top of their game.
In the second half without ever playing quite so well, Barton continued to play attractive football and create chances from both sides of the pitch. We forced a series of dangerous looking corners and at the back still looked secure.
When Callum Mackie rounded off a quick break to make it 3 - 1 with less than 10 minutes to go, it seemed as if that was that - and Barton would go on to seal a famous and well deserved victory. But the last few minutes showed what a cruel game it can be - and to be fair to BH, they had never stopped trying as they first pulled one goal back, then scored an equaliser. Barton wobbled a bit at the back for the last few minutes and stopped doing some of things we had done so well for the previous 60 minutes or so. The BH winner came from the cruellest of routes - from a Barton own goal.
By the reaction of the BH players and parents you would have thought they had won the Cup Final - they knew that they had been outplayed for most of the game by Barton and had played their "get out of jail free" card.
There is no doubt I my mind that we deserved far more form this game than we got. We defended well for long periods and attacked with real purpose. We played some super looking football at times and had excellent performances all round the pitch. If only the game lasted for 60 minutes and not 70 ! Bearing in mind the result over at BH earlier on in the season, this was an outstanding performance and while in the end we were all disappointed not to take anything from the game, we played like real heroes, with no little skill and style.
If we can reach this level of performance over the next few weeks, we can achieve some very good results and will soon be zooming up the table. We knew that this was going to be a tough old season with plenty of good teams in our division - we have shown in most games, that we can give any team a run for their money and only bad luck has stopped us gaining notable wins against both BH and Thatcham. Our playing record could and deserves to look very different from what it actually is. If we keep training hard and playing like this, our turn will come that's for sure.
This was a real team effort and as said, we had good performances all round the pitch, but probably special mention should be made to stand in keeper Paul Surtees and new boy Joe Gibbs, who look assured and confident in his first game of the season. Well done Barton - even though we lost the game, you made us all proud this morning !

Barton Rovers C 4 v 2 Goring Robins
What a game! We really did hit top form - particularly in the second half – in this thrilling 4-2 home victory over Goring Robins. The visitors struck the crossbar with a great lob before going a goal up, a scrambled effort that we couldn’t clear from our own 6 yard area. However it wasn’t long before we hit back when Alex Winn’s determined run and shot found the back of the net. (Also hit at this time was his Mum’s purse as this goal cost her a fiver – well done Alex, we would like you to cost your Mother a serious amount of cash before the season is out!). 1-1 was the half time score.
We made quite a few tactical changes in the second half (we’re trying players out in different positions, and one of our changes saw Joseph play out on the right wing, as opposed to the middle or even at the back). He was simply awesome in this role. He was at the heart of our second equalising goal. Tristan now in central midfield won the ball and played it out to Joseph on the overlap. Joseph held off his challenger and burst into the box. It looked odds on he would score but the Goring keeper stood firm and made a great save. Luckily for us the shot was parried into the path of Michael who calmly slotted the ball home.
This goal was especially pleasing as we had told the players before the game to start winning more second balls. Then Joseph himself grabbed a goal to give us the lead for the first time in the game. Another great move saw Michael set Tristan up, but his shot was saved too. But another follow up opportunity and this time Joseph pounced to side foot the ball over the line. 3-2! Marc then won us a penalty, after clearing off our own line moments earlier after a Goring Robins corner caused us some problems. But unfortunately Matthew, who scored a penalty last week, missed this one, sending his spot kick over the bar.
This set up a grandstand finish. The next goal, either way was crucial (cliché, cliché), and thankfully it went our way. Joseph chased a lot cause, and swung over a high cross. The ball arrowed it’s way towards Matthew’s head. Matthew rose like a salmon at the far post to loop a fantastic header into the top left hand corner of the goal, and that was it.
A special mention to Maciej, our second half goalkeeper and Managers man of the match. His handling was superb, and he was very assured. Our back line was immense, and didn’t let an awful lot though, Jordan and Alex Moulsley were outstanding. Joseph took the parents man of the match award – deservedly so, he changed the game with two assists and a goal to his name. Everyone played their part though. We asked for a team effort and today we got it. Well done lads.

Purley Jubilee 14 v 1 Barton Rovers
Ouchhhh !!!!
We knew we were in for a tough game against near rivals Purley but don't think anyone had bargained for this. After the previous 3 weeks seeing excellent performances put in, Barton under 13 B took a bit of a backward step on Sunday and learnt that football can be a very hard games at times. What went wrong then ? Well, Purley are a good team and will put a few other sides to the sword over the course of the season that's for sure, but at times, we made this pretty straight forward for them, not least by not putting in to practice what we preach in training. We knew that in this sort of game we had to be at the top of our form, but on Sunday we never really got going to the level we needed to get a result.
Too many times, we switched off all round the pitch at important points in the game, not least when we had done so well to get back in to the reckoning at 1 - 2 through an absolute 20 yard pearler from the hard grafting Jordan Blake, who emerged as one of our few bright spots on the day. At the back, Joe Giles also had a battling game as Purley poured forward especially in the second half. We lost shape as the game went on and failed to really get any of our passing game going for anything more than short spells. We started the game slowly and looked far too quiet and tentative on too many occasions. In some instances, we just let ourselves be dictated to, rather than impose ourselves on the game. Having said all this, we still created some good chances especially in the first half, which had we converted, might have seen a different game unfold - and finally, lets not take too much away from Purley, they are a not a bad team at all, and certainly had no intention of letting us off the hook.
As often the case, there is no easy answer to get this right. Good teams - which we are - do not become bad overnight - we have to get on with what we think is right in training, look to give full concentration and commitment to do things better, learn the lessons from Sunday and carry on with our overall improvement we have made this season - which we have ! There is no point in crying over split milk - we win together, we have to learn how to loose together too. This was a tough morning for everyone involved that's for sure. At the same time, we need to put it behind us and look forward at our next round of games in which we can - if we apply ourselves, and play to the top of our individual and collective games - do well.
Come on lads, lets forget this one, put it down to experience and go and show what we can do in our next set of games. Not least, while we were all disappointed and fed up by the end, we largely took defeat on the chin and avoided any histrionics. For this boys, if nothing else, well done.

Barton Rovers 5 v 1 AFC Newbury
Great start, passing the ball very well and on ten mins took the lead when Liam Reynolds struck a curling lob beautifully past a stranded keeper. we doubled the lead on 16 mins when Louis rounded the full back thumped in a cross & forced an own goal. A corner on 35 mins was dispatched into the top corner by James Szutenberg who seems to be making a habit of well taken headers.
Early into the second half a goal by Tommy Elmore made it 4. A spirited Newbury struck back to make it 4 - 1. We lost shape in the second half but still played well enough to get one more on 61mins Jake Smith has threatened to score for 7 seasons, this was his day, a left foot volley dispatched like Rooney, Jake the barn doors are open mate.
Well done lads, another win.

Barton 4 v 0 Theale
Perfect conditions for football allowed us to play some good football against a decent Theale team.
We looked very solid at the back with the back 5 all playing with confidence. Once we started to pass the ball from the back through midfield so that we could supply the front men we looked impressive and created plenty of chances without really giving Theale a chance on our goal.
Well done lads!

Laurel Park 7 v 2 Barton Rovers C
Looking down this match report page, 7-2 seems to be a very popular score line! Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of this particular result, losing out to high flying and free scoring Laurel Park. To be fair we conceded a couple of week goals, but Laurel were worthy winners for their first half showing in which they stormed to a 5-1 lead, although it was 1-1 for a while, Sean Ward scoring our goal - a great strike. Later in the half a lovely move ended with Alex Winn putting Ryan Strong in, but his first time shot flew just wide of the far post.
We made a real fight of it after the break when we changed the team around quite a bit, trying a couple of players in different positions, and it worked much better. Matthew Langham scored from the penalty spot to make the score 5-2, after Jordan Stringer was fouled. Two late goals for Laurel put the game totally out of our reach though.
Our man of the match was Nathan Cook who was immense in the second half, in an unfamiliar central midfield role. The parents award went to Ross Whitaker although it was a close run thing between Ross, goalkeeper Tristan Evans and right winger Marc Langham. Connor Deeks had another great game at right back.
Unlucky lads, let's see if we can get back on track next week.

3 matches in September and 3 wins for Barton Girls!!!!
However, it wasn't an easy ride for Barton.
The first game was against Aldershot in which we won 11-0, good finishing and neat passing saw barton cruise to victory. Girl of the match Shannon
Our second game was against a strong sandhurst team who went 2-0 up against us. We were not going to any ball and wasn't interested in the game at all!!! we luckily sneaked a goal back just before half time. so for the first time in ages the girls were losing at half time. With a polite moan to the girls at half time, we were ready for action. within 5 minutes we had got that equaliser and then 2 minutes later the 3rd goal in which was crucial as this seemed to settle the girls turning the game around in our favour. we scored another 2 goals to extend our lead but we become lazy and sandhurst popped up with another superb goal. so the final score being 5-3 to us. A very lucky result for us!! Girl of the match Frances.
Next game was against a strong physical frimley. we knew this game was going to be end to end stuff and full of entertainment. we had the worst possible start ever and were 1-0 down within 2 minutes, a corner was taken by frimley and barton seemed to watch them take it and gifted them an easy goal. Both teams were playing good football, Barton got a free kick which resulted in ellen scoring. so half time and 1-1. Not long into the second we were awarded a penalty for hand ball (can't comment as for some reason did not see the incident), after a bit of commotion, Ellen coolly slotted home to put us in the lead. the game could have still been anybody's but with 5 minutes left Rachel stroke home a late goal to give us a 3-1 win. So with or without the penalty we would have won but we'd like to thank Frimley for such an entertaining and good game of football they gave us. Girl of the match Ellen.
Well done girls keep it up, remember this year is going to be tough, all the teams are at the same ability and you have to be on your toes. the title this year can go to anybody as all the results have been close!!!
Next week at home to Camberley who we have never played before and who haven't lost a game this season so its going to be tough.

Berks & Bucks Cup -
Woodley 1-0 Barton Rovers
Really good, close cup tie played in a really good spirit by both teams on a lively pitch. The football ball was end to end with both teams creating at least 3 good goal scoring opportunities each. To be honest, the only surprise was that it finished 1-0 and not 4-3 or 3-4.
Well done to all of our lads who did their best and although we were all disappointed to lose it shows how far we have come in a short time that we are frustrated when we do not beat other good teams like Woodley & Cold ash last week.
The ref this week was excellent unlike like last week although some of our players are positive one of our efforts crossed the line before the keeper cleared the ball. I was too far away to see but the ref seemed confident in his decision which is just one of those things.
Well done lads and good luck to Woodley in the next round.

Goring Robins 3 Barton Rovers C 2
Another tight game and unfortunately another 3-2 reverse, this time at the hands of Goring Robins. On a fantastic Goring playing surface it was the hosts who struck first, in fact within 30 seconds, a lobbed shot that flew over Tristan Evans in goal. Within a minute we drew level, Marc Langham’s in swinging corner found it’s way directly into the goal, at the near post. What a start!
Alex Winn was doing his best to get on the score sheet fizzing one volley narrowly wide, before curling another effort just over the crossbar. However, Goring went ahead again after storming through and they led 2-1 at the break.
In the second half Ryan Strong hooked an absolute belter into the top left hand corner of the goal to draw us level again. Soon after we went route one and opened them up with a glorious chance. Maciej Lipowski replaced Tristan in goal, and it was his goal kick that found Marc galloping through but his low shot rebounded to safety after hitting the foot of the post. By now it was mainly pressure from us but we couldn’t break them down, even with Tristan adding a bit of bite in a midfield role.
Eventually, Goring’s winner came from a counter attack that we couldn’t defend, and the ball was slotted into the corner of the goal. Maciej had time to make a wonderful double save to keep us in it, but really we just weren’t at the races today. Despite that Connor Deeks had a great game at right full back and was managers man of the match. The parents award went to Marc.

Theale Under 13 B
A Sharp, B Flat, C Minor - Barton hit all the right notes on Sunday morning - playing football is like playing the piano - you have to practice hard to get the tune coming out right and hit the right keys at the right time. On Sunday, Barton played a tune so sweet, it was a joy to watch and had us dancing on the touchline to a whole new beat !
After a couple of difficult weeks [but increasingly promising performances against Kennet and Thatcham] Barton Under 13 B notched their first win of the season with a comprehensive victory over local rivals Theale Tigers, 7 - 2. This was an excellent all round team performance, with Callum Mackie grabbing an impressive 6 and Alex Turnbull adding the 7th. But perhaps most pleasingly of all, all 14 boys involved in the match played to the top of their game and Barton had heroes literally all round the pitch.
Once again Rob Sherwood looked confident and self assured in goal and Joe "The King of Bling" Ritchie had his normal barn storming game in the centre of the pitch. At the back, Pete Twyford, Joe Giles, Zach Smith and George Taylor all easily had their best games of the season and in the middle Joe Beasley, Jordan Blake combined good energy levels with strong passing and movement to weave patterns through the Theale back 4. Tom Burnett played well in his new role up front and might have scored towards the end and our 3 subs - Big George, Chris Taylor and Alex Young all came on at various stages of the game and played more than their full part.
On a bright and sunny morning with the Turnham's pitches looking in good nick, Barton started the game strongly and after a close opening first 20 minutes, took the lead through Callum and Alex soon made it 2 - 0. A beautiful quickly worked free kick made it 3 ["switched on" or what, eh boys ?] and then Callum added a 4th just before half time. Although Theale pulled back two consolation goals in the second half, there was only going to ever be one winner as Mackie added to his total with 3 more and Barton created a host of other chances - which on another day might have seen us hit double figures.
Some of the football Barton played was a delight to watch - strong and purposeful at the back, inventive and all action in the midfield and always dangerous up front. Callum with 6 well taken goals was clearly a major and deserved success on the day but the best part of this performance was the level of all round commitment, skill, attitude and application of the Barton team and the discipline we showed throughout the game.
This was great stuff and a victory enjoyed by all - and quite rightly too.

Barton Rovers 4 v 1 Kennet Valley
Again we got straight into our stride and after playing some great passing football got our just deserve with a great goal by Tommy Elmore. Kennet didn't have too many chances but did break through to equalise.
Before half time after dominating alot of the game with loads of possession, James Szutenberg scored to make it two-one.
In the second half Barton really started to pass well and a move that started at right back saw a series of passes through the midfield and the wing ended with a great cross thumped home by Louis. Again after loads of missed chances a great passing move led to a cool headed Liam scoring at the far post.
Great result, we're on track, well done.

Cold Ash 2 v 1 Barton Rovers
COLDASH REVIEW: I’m 39 years of age this month (no sarcastic comments please) and I've been heavily involved in football for 30 of those years in different roles and at all levels of football and I thought I had seen everything until the game against Cold Ash! I do not usually comment on other teams/managers/refs but I feel it needs saying. Cold ash cannot or should not take any pleasure out of winning the match, due to the circumstances behind the result.
Positive stuff: Loads of it, great football match with Barton playing the the attractive passing style that has become our benchmark, even one of the Cold ash parents made a point of seeing me after the game to comment that we were the better team and should have won. Great effort, commitment, energy, team work, passing, skill, pace and determination to win. The players handled themselves really well in the face of the stuff listed below. I’m not saying that we don't give as good as we get but I am very proud of you lads, you all came of age against Cold ash and you should be pleased with your game.
Negative stuff: The ref was having a reasonable game I thought but ended up costing us the game by not awarding a clear cut penalty to Dan and then by giving a corner in the dying moments and overruling the linesman who flagged for a goal kick.He then blew the whistle after the kick was taken and the ball was in the air only for one of our defenders to catch the ball thinking, quite rightly, that the ref wanted the corner re-taken. We all know the outcome, he gave a penalty to Cold ash when he quite have easily done the sporting thing and ordered the corner to be re-taken as it was the ref who caused the confusion. (To the best of my knowledge he had not blown his whistle to signal any other corner during the course of the match).
Keep it going lads, your a credit to Barton Rovers FC

Barton Rovers 2 v 3 Thatcham Tornadoes
Barton Rovers Under 13 B put in a terrific performance again this week and although finally going down 3 - 2 against Thatcham had actually led for long periods of the game. Both Barton goals were absolute beauties, the first a well worked move and finish from Joe "Bomber" Beasley and the second a cracking 25 yarder from Joe "the King of Bling" Ritchie.
After going 2 -1 ahead mid way through the first half, Barton then turned on the style and proceeded to create a stack of chances. The fact that the Thatcham goalie was their MOTM paid testament to the way that Barton poured forward at every opportunity and only a combination of bad luck in front of goal, some desperate last ditch defending from Thatcham prevented Baryon from going further ahead. Yet Thatcham clawed their way back in to the game with a second and clinched their winner in the dying minutes with an somewhat lucky deflection. Still Barton had chances to rescue something out of the game but luck was not on our side. But fair play to Thatcham they stuck at it and played well to get their second win of the season.
But this was a hugely positive performance all round with lots of good football and some excellent play at times. At the back, we looked a million miles from the team that struggled to cope with Kennet Valley at times last week - in midfield we were full of hard running and no little invention and up front we created lots and were unlucky on a number of occasions not to get our just desserts. This was a highly encouraging performance and if we can reach this level of football again over the next few weeks, it will not be long before we are chalking up points on the board. Well done Barton, you deserved more from this game, but lets go again next week, in our local derby against Theale.
Overall, this was a good game of Under 13 football with both sides contributing to an open and competitive fixture.

Attendance: 30 (ish!)
After last week’s defeat at Caversham, the boys knew they had to put in a better performance this week and that’s exactly what they did.
From the kick-off they looked very composed and relaxed on the ball and it wasn’t long before the boys opened the scoring. Buckett passed the ball through to Brocks who then drove towards goal and slotted the ball into the bottom corner, 1–0!
Soon after, a throw from Max was crossed in by Buckett and Brocks scored his second, 2-0! The boys carried on with the pressure and looked to keep the ball on the ground and pass it around. The third was an own goal as a result of a good cross from Nash that had the defenders panicking and putting through their own net, 3-0! Cold Ash managed to pull one back shortly before half-time, but the boys thoroughly deserved their half-time lead.
The second half began and the boys carried on from where they left off. After some good work from Max on the right he then passed the ball inside to Daniels who picked his spot in the bottom corner for 4-1! Again Cold Ash pulled one back soon after, but it was to be the last time they scored.
Barton continued to press and Buckett passed the ball to Penney who hit a great shot from just outside the area into the back of the net, 5-2! The boys were enjoying themselves and playing some really good football when Brocks won the ball and drove towards the goal. His shot beat the keeper, but came off the post and Nash was following up to score and make it 6-2!
Towards the end of the game Penney had the ball out on the wing and delivered a great cross for Freeman to head the ball into the back of the net to make it 7-2!
Overall it was a great performance from every member of the team and the boys got their reward that they deserved. Thanks to Dave for refereeing and Chris for running the line.

Early Barton pressure led to a deserved one nil lead by a Liam Reynolds tap in. Barton played lovely passing football for the first 20 mins.
Newbury battled back and equalised early in the second half. Barton pushed on, and again took the lead thanks to a great ball in from Josh Helmore met at the far post by Louis Clarke to make it 2-1 Barton then went to sleep as Newbury pushed hard and got their reward 2 mins from time to take the game into extra time. Deadlock then led to penalties. Two saves by Sam Parkins & Pens scored by Antonio, Louis, George, & Luke Mockford put Barton into the next round.

A good win with some well taken goals and at times some decent football. Our forwards were in good form with Finbar scoring a hat-trick along with Ben P getting two plus Dan and Robert getting one a piece. An own goal finished off the scoring.

AFC Newbury 3 v 2 Barton Rovers C
This was a tight game. It could have gone either way, and maybe a draw would have been a fair outcome. However for us, it was not to be. Here's how it went:
Barton Rovers C lost 3-2 away at AFC Newbury. The hosts struck first on 15 minutes with a perfectly executed free kick, but Barton’s Matthew Langham battled superbly to equalise with a well placed shot just inside the far post. In the second half Joseph Evans set up Connor Yarde to race through to put Barton 2-1 up, but Newbury grabbed all three points with two goals later in the game. Barton’s man of the match was the dominating central defender Nathan Cook whilst goalkeeper Tristan Evans also impressed with some great handling.

Kennet Valley 7 v 4 Barton Rovers
This was a brilliant performance by Barton, who looked a completely different side from the one that crashed to an opening day defeat at Boyn Hill the week before.
In the end, we ran a good Kennet Valley team all the way and finally went down 7 - 4, but in the course of the game, had staged a massive comeback and played some great football in the process.
The match opened at a fast pace, with the KV front two causing us plenty of problems at the back and they soon raced in to a 4 - 0 lead through a combination of some good play by them and some over tentative defending by us. It looked as we were staring straight down the barrel at this stage with only 15 minutes of the game gone, and goalie Rob Sherwood keeping us in with some great play in between the sticks. At this stage though, Barton launched an impressive come back and by half time we were just one goal adrift at 3 - 4, thanks to two excellent strikes from Callum Mackie and a thunderbolt from Joe "Bomber" Beasley - with now it being KV's turn to show a few wobbles.
In the second half, while never fully coming to terms with the lively KV attack we looked much more secure at the back with Rob Sherwood once again outstanding. In midfield, we were winning lots of ball and increasingly asking all sorts of questions of the KV defence - and up front, we led their back 4 a merry dance and created a whole host of chances which either just went round the post, were saved at the last minute or saw KV desperately defending their slim lead.
One felt that if we had got back to 4 - 4, we would have gone on to win it for sure. But it was KV who went further ahead with a quick break and then through a penalty, before we pulled one back through Callum Mackie again to secure his well deserved hat trick and bring back the score to 7 - 4. Still Barton weren't finished and in the last 6 -7 minutes of the game, we carried on creating chances and could have really pushed KV to the very last second of the game.
Overall, while it was disappointing to loose this game, the quality and style of the performance was so much better than last week, it was a pleasure to watch the game, in which Barton played their full part.
Man of the match without a doubt - Rob Sherwood - strong and confident in goal - closely followed by Callum for a well taken hat trick. Keep it going boys, this was a tremendous performance all round and we can still play better.

Following last weeks thrilling win, the boys arrived in a confident mood for the match. However, within twenty minutes we were 4-0 down and the commitment and hard work shown last week just wasn't’t there.
To be fair to the boys, the first two goals we conceded gave Hooper in goal no chance to save. Their first was a high hit and hope from way outside the area and the second was a quality strike into the top corner. The third was a result of the defence not clearing the ball and the forth was ruled to have crossed the line by the referee when the linesman didn't’t give it!
So half-time came around and the boys still thought they could get something from the game and so did the parents. All we needed was an early goal and that’s what we got!
Penney scored a great goal from outside the area, lobbing the goalkeeper perfectly. But it wasn’t enough to get the boys going and Caversham hit back straight away and then went and scored a couple more to make it 7-1. With the last kick of the game, Nash scored with another long range effort to make the score line a little bit more respectable.
Caversham are a good team and they’ll be at the top or near the top at the end of the season, but the score line flattered them a bit. The defence didn’t clear the ball very well all afternoon and the midfield were over-run and didn’t win enough headers or enough tackles. Having said that, Brocks was putting himself about a bit in the second half and kept on running at their defence at every opportunity.
The boys will need to put in a better performance at the weekend to avoid another bad result.
Thanks again to the parents for cheering the boys on all through the game and thanks to Phil for running the line even though the referee ignored him for their fourth goal!!!! Under 16
Calcot 2 v 4 Barton A
Barton got straight into their stride and passed the ball around great and took the lead after five mins through George Batts. Calcot managed a couple of attacks in the first half and despite loads of Barton pressure the score was Calcot 2 Barton 1. In the second half we were patient and endless pressure paid off as hard work on each wing from Daniel and Louis earned us a penalty converted well by Antonio for the equaliser. As the game wore on we were fitter and had the lion share of possession and two goals by Josh Helmore from Liam Reynold assists sealed the win.

Caversham Cougers 0 v 8 Barton Rovers
A comfortable 8-0 victory was a pleasing start to the season compared to last season. We took control of the game from the 1st whistle and played some decent passing football to create chance after chance. Ben Partridge caught the eye and led the way with the 1st goal and a 1st half hat-trick. We led 6-0 at half time and as such made plenty of rolling substitutions and positional changes. All of the players did well with the other scorers being Finbar Bourke, Robert Gerrard, Dan Hayward, Jack Wilkins and a debut goal from Nick Grosvenor.
With a clean sheet for Aaron, impressive display by the defence, in particular Harry Rose, improved passing by the midfield and lethal front play we can be pleased so far. With some tough games coming up |
